By: Maria Ackermann Sagemont’s Elementary School Art Teacher, Lauren Tubbs, enjoys finding ways in which her love for the arts can be used in a positive way. Tubbs said, “It is my personal goal as an art educator to help my students discover a love and appreciation for art that will hopefully last a lifetime. The Sagemont School is very involved with different charitable endeavors each year and the students, families, and staff here are all very generous so I knew the Empty Bowls Project would be a success.” Fifth grader Rebecca Schultz said, “It makes me feel good to be involved in the Empty Bowls Project because I know that I am helping people who are less fortunate than I am and it’s a good way to give back to my community.” The students have already begun creating their ceramic bowls. After the bowls have been constructed and allowed to dry, they will be fired and glazed. In January, parents will be invited to a spaghetti and meatballs luncheon for a $20 donation. The parents will get to keep their child’s empty bowl as a reminder of the empty bowls around the world. The money raised will be donated to Feeding South Florida, which provides food to those in need in the South Florida area.
