The Browns can't catch the Lions for the dubious honor of "worst record for the decade," but they'll finish second, and they look as bad as or worse than the Detroit sadsacks who went 0-16 in 2008.

What happening?

Not so long ago, the Chargers were sucking exhaust in the AFC West behind a Denver team that shot to a 6-0 start. Suddenly, San Diego is 8-3, in sweet position to grab a 2-seed in the playoffs. The Chargers trail only the Colts, and benefitted from a Monday night loss that dropped the Patriots to 7-4. The Browns are in position to beg Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, or somebody to come in to stop the misery. They have lost 16 of 17 over two seasons. So, here's a swell show for anyone who hates the thought of parity. These teams are as close as Earth and Uranus.

The Browns rue the day they failed to spend even a seventh-round pick on an athletic freak who was right under their noses, playing basketball at Kent State. Antonio Gates would be having a career year if his touchdown production wasn't abnormally low, but he began taking care of that with two touchdowns against the Chiefs last Sunday. San Diego's modest risk of signing Gates as an undrafted free agent is one of recent NFL history's great heists. Strong safety Abe Elam will spend some time on Gates. That will be interesting ... a former Kent State football player getting abused by a former Kent State basketball star.

Fantasy league owners might look forward to another day in the sun for LaDainian Tomlinson. He is on a touchdown spree, but his yardage has been no great shakes. He could look like the L.T. of old against Cleveland's tired defense. Larry Johnson, having an awful year before he was cut by the Chiefs, caught a second wind as a Bengal against Cleveland, rushing 22 times for 107 yards Sunday. Surely Tomlinson, averaging just 3.4 yards and without a 100-yard game this season, lights up when he looks at the coaches' clip of any Browns game. The Browns were ranked No. 32 in total defense even before Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers went on injured reserve.

What happening?

The Browns can't catch the Lions for the dubious honor of "worst record for the decade," but they'll finish second, and they look as bad as or worse than the Detroit sadsacks who went 0-16 in 2008. Browns fans are in "how do I hate thee" mode, having grown sick of watching a tepid running attack, an awful passing game, leaky pass defense and a run defense frequently hurt inside and out. The Browns were ranked 32nd in total defense even before injuries left prospects even more miserable. These are days of forced smiles and counting down to a sprint to postseason vacations.

The Chargers, on the other hand, announced themselves as a Super Bowl threat with a recent 32-3 beatdown at Denver that is the master stroke of their current six-game win streak. QB Phillip Rivers has the offense humming, and the defense is finding itself.

Good teams have punished the Browns all year. San Diego is flirting with greatness, and the Browns have the potential to keep getting worse.
