What happening?

The Jay Cutler saga has become a lot like a car crash: People just have to stop and gawk. Cutler has now thrown more interceptions (20) than any Bears quarterback since Rudy Bukich threw 21 in 1966. Whether it has been all Cutler's fault or not, the public interest is there to watch more because of how much the Bears traded to get him and how much his coming to Chicago was trumpeted.

In a way, it's a battle of mistake-prone quarterbacks. The Rams' Kyle Boller always has been known for erratic play and has five interceptions and 11 sacks with only 132 attempts. Boller hadn't played in six weeks until coming in last Sunday for injured Marc Bulger. With Bulger being rumored as heading elsewhere after this season, it's a chance for the Rams to see what more they have at QB in Boller, who is still relatively inexperienced.

The game pits two teams desperate for just one victory. The Bears are currently amid their worst seven-game stretch since they also lost six in seven games during the final seven contests of coach Lovie Smith's first season of 2004. The Rams are so bad they've inspired some fans to start wearing bags over their heads like the old "Aints" fans of New Orleans. St. Louis hasn't won since Nov. 1 over Detroit and has scored 13 points or less six times.

The game also features a Chicago coaching staff drawing a great deal of fan and media heat and a Rams staff starting to draw more fire even though it's still only Steve Spagnuolo's first year. One win in 11 games will do that. More was expected than this. One of these two coaching staffs will have a little less heat on them after this one -- at least for a little while.

The Bears no longer have a realistic shot at a playoff berth and have adjusted their goals to something more meager -- just getting a win after losing four straight. QB Jay Cutler has been far better at home than on the road and with the threat of a running game against a poor run defense, the offense should take better advantage of opportunities. Meanwhile, a Bears defense allowing 45 percent of the opponents' third down conversions -- after giving up 12-of-18 to Minnesota -- is finally able to get off the field while facing an injury-plagued Rams offense that ranks 30th in scoring (130 points).
