Dec. 3, 2009 - PRLog -- Chicago, IL – As temperatures plummet and the first hint of snow teases the crisp air, holiday decorations have begun to appear in storefronts, offices, and neighborhoods across the country.  Brightly colored lights twinkle out of windows and the glint of tinsel meets travelers at every street corner.  People rush home to greet loved ones and to celebrate the holidays in whatever fashion they choose.  The feeling in the air is one of excitement, happiness, and love.

This celebration of the holiday season serves as the perfect reminder of the diversity of our nation.  Religious practices are a sensitive issue during the holiday season and are generally respected in the workplace.  According to HR Solutions’ Normative Database, 80 percent of employees believe that their co-workers are respectful of other religions or religious beliefs and 71 percent of employees agree that the cultural values, beliefs, and customs of different groups are understood and respected at their organization.  In addition, 74 percent of employees said that they value diversity of the workforce at their organization and 79 percent of employees think their supervisor treats all of his or her employees fairly, regardless of gender, race, age, religion, or sexual orientation.

“As we approach the end of year holidays, it is a good time to remember one of the principles upon which this country was founded, the principle of religious acceptance,” said Murat Philippe, Principal Consultant for HR Solutions.  “This is a first amendment right which ensures that ‘congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.’  As we near the end of the year, we should strive to extend this same fundamental freedom to the workplace.”
