Follow on Google News | Saint Barnabas Medical Center Surgeon Performs New Minimally Invasive Gallbladder SurgeryRonald Chamberlain, MD, MPH, FACS, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) performed SBMC’s first Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery for a gallbladder removal at SBMC in November 2008.
By: Saint Barnabas Medical Center Over the last 20 years, gallbladder surgery has gone from requiring one large incision to minimally invasive surgery that required 4 small ½ incisions. With this type of SILS surgery, there is only one 5 millimeter incision made through the belly button to remove the gall bladder. Chamberlain cautions that the SILS procedure is technically challenging and can not be done on every patient. However, in patients that are candidates for this type of procedure there is virtually no sign of the incision. This safe and effective surgery is one of the many advanced procedures that are being done at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
