The Importance of Internal Assessment

Paul Thomas of Market Makers, gave a presentation on “Business Growth During a Recession“ at Enterprise ’09. Here Mr Thomas urged the audience to not make excuses and work out different ways to make business work, during these testing times.

Dec. 1, 2009 - PRLog -- I wanted to catch up with Market Makers and speak with Henry Braithwaite, the Operations Director, to see just what they were doing to move forward during the current (climbing) economical climate.
“We actively move forward with our clients and explore different ways to find them new business. Most importantly we continually modify and assess campaigns. Everyone here at Market Makers has a really positive attitude which adds enthusiasm and passion to every campaign.
It is vital to us that as a business we also assess ourselves, one of the reasons why we enter the Times Top 100 Companies To Work For. This year we were awarded 25th place, a great achievement for us. We have entered it again for 2010. Personal development and assessment is key for business growth, especially in the current climate.”
2009 was the first time Market Makers entered the Times Top 100 Companies To Work For as it is a fantastic way to assess your current strategy and look for ways to move forward and improve upon.  As Henry mentions,
“If you look at some of the questions asked in the Times questionnaire that is given out to employees, you can start to see the link between assessment, development and growth. It asks the respondent if they have skills that their organisation may not be using. This is an essential factor that we consider. Are we using all of our employee’s skills to the maximum? And have we thought about their potential involvement in other areas of the business?”
It is imperative to look within your company and assess all the different ways individuals could grow and help the company evolve. Check you are using everyone’s key skills and have meetings with your team to ensure everyone is experiencing continuous development. Henry adds,  
“When assessing any company strategy and looking towards growth it is paramount to assess leadership. For example the Times questionnaire asks questions such as, does your manager regularly express their appreciation? Does the leader of the organisation run the company on sound moral principles? Does your manager care about how satisfied you are in your job?
It is important to make sure you communicate effectively with your teams and colleagues so they are all given the praise needed. It’s why here at Market Makers we get together and have a whole company meeting every Monday morning and Friday afternoon. On the Monday we look forward to the week and build upon the enthusiasm within the office. On Fridays we all get together before the weekend to look back and celebrate the successes of the week.”
It is vital to concentrate on growth, but you should not just look at improving your business strategy. Look within your company and asses the environment, mood and individuals’ development and progress, all of this combined will help you construct an effective strategy to move forward in the current economic climate”
Internal assessment is key to business growth to ensure you are working as a strong team. Market Makers are a great example of this with weekly company meetings, celebrating great work and continually assessing individual’s development and the skills they can bring to the company.
