Nov. 23, 2009 - PRLog -- WSP Environment & Energy and Accenture have published a white paper for Microsoft on a study that demonstrates significant environmental benefits when customers download software over the internet.

The carbon footprint Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), commissioned by Microsoft, compares the carbon footprint of traditional DVD/CD distribution with digital software distribution for Microsoft's Volume Licensing business customers.  The study found that electronic software distribution produces 91% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than producing and shipping physical media disks (i.e., CDs & DVDs) and their associated packaging.

Microsoft is committed to supporting a low carbon economy through its products and services and this study has provided them, and indeed the whole ICT community, with real tangible evidence to support increased use of the online distribution channel.

This is the second white paper to be published this year for Microsoft. Back in April, WSP Environment & Energy and Accenture published a white paper calculating the business value and environmental benefits of digital software distribution.
