Nov. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- A new study by www.rightmobilephone.co.uk has shown that the number of people who cheat in pub quizzes is on the up and 75% of landlords asked would like to put restrictions in place to prevent people from using their handsets on quiz night.

Rightmobilephone.co.uk questioned 52 landlords who held pub quizzes and 976 pub quiz-goers to find out what effect mobiles had on the night and found that over half of those who went to quiz nights admitted to cheating.

Of those who admitted to cheating in a pub quiz, 51% said they Googled answers on their mobile and 36% said that they phoned a friend or sent a text. A shameless 8% admitted to asking the audience and trying to get answers from other pub quiz teams.

Only 41% said they hadn’t ever cheated at a pub quiz and of those, 2 in 5 had snitched on someone they saw cheating.

A growing number of landlords are now showing concern over pub quiz con-artists, with 11% claiming to have already demanded that mobiles are switched off or handed in prior to the quiz. Just under two thirds claim to catch cheating pub-quizzers out on a regular basis and 36% have made prizes less substantial out of cheating fears.

Speaking about the rise in people using their mobile phones to cheat in pub quizzes, Neil McHugh, co-founder of rightmobilephone.co.uk said;

“It’s a real shame that dishonesty seems to now be the best policy for winning a pub quiz, as all the fun seems to be taken out of the concept. The thing is, mobile technology is so advanced now that it really isn’t surprising that people are tempted to use their phone to find out an answer in some way.

He continued, “Landlords have been known to ban re-entry into their pub once a quiz has started to avoid cheating and have caught certain people out by giveaway pulsing sounds caused by interference from mobiles. It may seem dramatic, but there’s often large amounts of money at stake and plenty of pubs take cheating quite seriously.”
