Pine Street Carpenters Prepare for 2nd Annual “100 Wheels Project”

Remodeling company purchases and assembles 50 bicycles to be given to underprivileged children.

Nov. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- Pine Street Carpenters, Inc., a design-build remodeling company based in West Chester, is preparing for its annual community outreach initiative dubbed the “100 Wheels Project.” Through this initiative, which was launched by Pine Street Carpenters last year, the company will purchase and assemble 50 bicycles that will go to underprivileged children this holiday season.

Pine Street Carpenters will purchase the unassembled bicycles, and its employees will donate their time and energy to assemble the bicycles at an evening bike-assembling party on December 10.

“Unassembled bikes are much less expensive than assembled bikes,” explains Michael Dolan, Marketing and Communications Manager for Pine Street Carpenters. “Through our staff’s sweat equity, we are able to make our investment go much further.”

Pine Street Carpenters’ employees, family members, and friends in the cycling community will gather on December 10 for an evening of bike-assembling.

“By the end of the evening,” says Dolan, “all 50 bicycles will be assembled and ready for delivery to our partner organizations.”

This year, Pine Street Carpenters is partnering with five local non-profit agencies: The Care Center (West Chester, PA); Catholic Social Services’ Chester County Family Service Centers (West Chester, PA and Coatesville, PA); Chester County Migrant Ministry (Kennett Square, PA); La Comunidad Hispana (Kennett Square, PA); and Family Services of Montgomery County (Eagleville, PA).

“Each of these organizations provides vital social services to the community,” says Brendon Dolan, owner of Pine Street Carpenters. “Thanks to our staff, these bicycles will make it to children in their care just in time for the holidays.”

In addition to bicycles, employees and friends of Pine Street Carpenters also donate helmets to accompany each bike. Bike Line of West Chester is also donating bike locks for the bicycles.

Pine Street Carpenters launched “The 100 Wheels Project” last year to help offset the decline in donations to holiday toy drives because of the economy, and it hopes to do the same again this December. Why bikes?

Dolan, along with lead carpenter Tom O’Neill of East Lansdowne, PA, are both avid cyclists, as are other members of the company’s staff. For the past 16 years, Pine Street Carpenters has fielded a team in the American Cancer Society’s annual Bike-a-thon from Philadelphia to New Jersey.

“Cycling is part of our culture,” says Dolan. “’The 100 Wheels Project’ is a great way for us to do some good, and have some fun in the process.”
