By: INDIE VIXENS LLC The first documentary shot entirely in high-definition video, the full-length 80-minute feature film cost $1.5 million to produce and studies the controversial, polarizing subject of violence in video games. Both sides of this provocative issue are covered from a neutral point of view, with some believing violent games should be banned, and others supporting the medium under First Amendment rights and parental responsibility. Written by Steven Kent and Skylar James, with music by Mark Petrie and cinematography by Jeff Orsa, the film was directed and produced by Spencer Halpin and Ramy Katrib. The film will be screened exclusively at the Jazz Heritage Center’s new JHC Media and Education Center, 1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. The industry and press-only screening will take place Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 and 9:00 PM, with a panel discussion and cocktail reception following the first screening. With game violence continuing to be a controversial and current topic, it is the goal of this screening to bring together key and influential videogame industry members - including some of the people interviewed in the film, and the filmmaker for the Bay Area debut show. The IGDA screening will be held on Wednesday, November 11 at 7:00 and 9:00 PM to kick off its 2009 Leadership Forum. A panel discussion and cocktail reception will follow the first screening. There will be two public screenings held on Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 and 9:00 PM for a reduced admission of $5.00. “I’m excited to screen the film at the JHC Media and Education Center and honored to be part of the panel discussions with the game industry community,” said filmmaker, Spencer Halpin. “Moral Kombat has been a passion project that I believe to be important for a number of reasons, one of which is that the debate over violence in videogames is really more about the impact that media has on consumers, cognitively. While the film takes a neutral point of view, I believe it’s valuable for people on both sides to see it and then discuss the differing perspectives.” Prominently interviewed in the film are leading politicians such as Senator Joe Lieberman, as well as journalists, academics, trade associations, retailers, publishers and game designers, including Jack Thompson, Jeff Griffiths, Ed Williams, Dr. David Walsh, Vince Broady, Dr. Henry Jenkins, Dean Takahashi, Greg Ballard, Bob McKenzie, Andy McNamara, and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. The filmmaker’s brother, Hal Halpin - a computer game executive, entrepreneur and President of the Entertainment Consumers Association, also appears in the film. Spencer Halpin’s Moral Kombat makes extensive use of green screen technology to blend the subject matter being discussed (games, characters, and archival news footage), in the background, while keeping the interviewee actively in the shot. The film was adopted by Stanford University’s Fair Use Project due to the extensive use that Halpin made of in-game imagery. Fair Use is a critical doctrine to independent filmmakers with limited resources at their disposal and the fact that this documentary was selected by the University as one of their benchmark titles speaks volumes about its relative importance to creative freedom in the medium. Additional sponsors for the private industry events on November 10th and 11th include Blue Angel Vodka, Napa Station Wines, Hahn Family Wines, Bellwether Farms and L&Z Designs. Industry, press and IGDA members may RSVP for the screenings on November 10th and 11th by emailing jewell@indievixens.com.
