Financial Soultions: China urged to have CO2 emissions halved by 2050.

Nov. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- Financial Soultions has learned that Jonathan Pershing, head of the U.S. delegation at the Barcelona round of climate talks has urged China to roughly halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. He also asked that China, which recently overtook the U.S. as the top CO2 emitter on a national volume, spell out its goals for cutting its greenhouse gases as part of the new pact envisaged to result from the Copenhagen climate conference in December.

In a mid-year summit in Italy, leading industrialized nations agreed that the planet needs to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 to avoid the worst effects of global warming and committed to cutting their own emissions by 80%.

The U.S. delegate said China should halve their emissions to allow for somewhat lower targets for poorer nations which would give them space to develop their economies, Financial Soultions understands.

"If you put China in there at a 50% reduction, if we're a bit higher, that gives lesser developed countries a bit lower. If they are in that middle band, plus or minus some percentage, that seems about right," Pershing was quoted as saying.

China has as yet not set a fixed target for 2050, saying that it needs to prioritize raising millions of it population from poverty, but has indicated that it will make a concerted effort towards fighting climate change.


The U.S who pulled out of the Kyoto Protocol in 2001 has not yet managed to pass a climate change bill through the senate and into law, and has yet to commit to a meaningful emissions target, Financial Soultions understands, with Pershing stating that the United States was "not opposed" to a legally binding climate treaty, under the U.N. process.
