By: Dr Judith McDonald Fall-Spring 2009 This program matches Belmont Abbey College (BAC) female science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors with 5th grade girls from North Belmont Elementary School to encourage them to consider entering college as STEM majors. A mentoring partnership will be developed between the women from BAC and 21 girls at North Belmont Elementary School. The program begins November 4th at Belmont Abbey College. BAC Stem majors have been given 3 or 4 girls’ names to establish a mentoring relationship prior to the girls’ visit to BAC. Here is the agenda for Wednesday: • Elementary students will attend a STEM class at BAC with their BAC mentors. • North Belmont students will be given a tour of the BAC campus. • Both college students and North Belmont students will attend a luncheon on campus. At the luncheon women in STEM careers will come and informally discuss their role in STEM and what preparation it took to accomplish their goals. • College students will then be invited to go to North Belmont Elementary School to mentor their girls by the school principal, Mr. Chris Germain. This program was developed and created by the Belmont Abbey College Department of Education and received a grant from the National Science Foundation through the National Girls Collaborative Project, Advancing the Agenda in Gender Equity for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
