Raw Foodists Shifting to Low-Fat 80-10-10 Diet

More raw foodists are moving from high-fat diets to low-fat diets. The raw food faddists are taking notice of Dr. Douglas Graham's 80-10-10 diet, a low-fat raw food diet that emphasizes eating a lot of fruit.

Oct. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- Raw foodists are slowly realizing that their diets are very high in fat, maybe too high. High fat diets of all kinds have been discouraged by conventional medical science (USDHHS, 1988; National Research Council, 1989) for many years on account of the increased risk of various cancers. Many raw foodists are now taking note and are turning to low-fat raw diets to avoid the health consequences of high-fat diets.

Raw food diets typically emphasize foods that are high in fat like nuts, seeds, and avocados. Raw food diets need high calorie fatty foods to help meet the caloric requirements of most people. The low-starch vegetables and fruits that are at the core of a raw foodist’s diet generally cannot supply adequate calories without high-fat foods.

Dr. Douglas Graham provides a low-fat diet solution for raw foodists in the form of his 80-10-10 diet. Specifically, the solution involves eating a lot of fruit, much more than most people commonly eat. The 80-10-10 diet suggests obtaining 80% of one’s total calories from carbohydrates, mostly in the form of ripe, raw, whole fruit. In addition, the diet recommends keeping the number of calories derived from fat to below 10% of calories consumed.

Proponents of this diet plan include colorful personalities like YouTube’s DurianRider, an Australian endurance bicyclist and video blogger, and Kathleen Leonard, a runner and triathlete.

RawFood811Talk.com was founded in October 2009 to provide raw foodists a place to talk about low-fat raw food diets. The site offers a range of articles, blog posts and message forums for the health conscious consumer.
