By: NY Times Quick Bite | Teaneck - The Way It¹s Done in Japan¹ Nancy Wegard for The New York Times By KELLY FEENEY Published: October 23, 2009 Yakitori - Japanese-style skewered chicken grilled over charcoal - is the main attraction at the recently opened Yakitori 39 in Teaneck. But the menu also ventures in other directions, with dishes like spicy salmon rolls, onigiri (rice balls) and homemade country pâté Everything is à la carte; each yakitori skewer has four or five bite-size pieces of meat. Thigh, breast, liver and heart are among the chicken parts used, and the price per skewer ranges from $2 to $3.50, depending on which part you choose. Skewered duck breast ($6) and lamb chop ($5) are also available. The yakitori is served either with salt or a sweet sauce similar to teriyaki. ³We do it the way it¹s done in Japan,² said the co-owner, David Sindell. He and David Nachman opened this casual, cozy spot, which seats around 30, in June. Mr. Sindell lived in Japan for many years and imports its charcoal and salt, for the sake of authenticity. Beverages served include sake and shochu, a distilled spirit. The two owners formerly ran Bistro En, a well-regarded Japanese-French fusion restaurant in the same location, which closed earlier this year. Yoshikatsu Yamashita, the chef who worked with them there, is still in the kitchen here. The red apple compote with a hint of red wine ($5) was a good finish to a takeout meal of grilled asparagus wrapped in bacon ($3); Japanese potato salad ($3); Nagoya chicken wings, marinated in soy sauce and rice wine, then deep fried, ($6); and of course, yakitori.
