Oct. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- Wesley Chapel, FL – On November 11th, the Garden Montessori School in Wesley Chapel will open its doors as a “Certified Green School,” becoming the first preschool/day care center in both Florida and the United States to receive this distinction.

The certification was awarded by the Green Schools League, Inc., a green technology and best-practices organization based in Plainfield, Ill.  This organization recognizes businesses and schools that have adopted sustainable and environmentally friendly practices as well as conduct regular audits.

Natalie Calleja, a Certified Green Consultant and directors of the Green Schools League and president of The Green Consulting Firm LLC in Tampa, presented the certification to Stefani Ruskin and Patricia Gutierrez, owners of the Garden Montessori School. “This certification is an acknowledgement of the vision and commitment that Ms. Ruskin and Ms. Gutierrez have made to create and maintain a healthy school environment that the teachers, students and parents share on a day-to-day basis” says Calleja.

Because of the efforts of the staff, parents, and students at Garden Montessori, the school was awarded over 200 points during the green audit, earning them Gold level certification.  By earning Gold certification, Garden Montessori has demonstrated a high level of commitment to environmentally friendly practices. Becoming more energy efficient, replacing paper-based communications, switching to non-toxic cleaning practices, and implementing both recycling and composting programs are just a few of the changes made by the Garden Montessori School.

Co-owner Stefani Ruskin says, “Our primary motivation for going green was to provide the children with a healthy environment. Our goal is to make the children more aware of living responsibly. We hope that by teaching the students about conservation and recycling, we will help them think about how they impact the planet. We want to teach our students to become responsible citizens through our example.”
