Make New Clients by Building Bridges to New Markets Abroad

When looking for new contacts or prospective clients abroad, language may pose a problem, specially when English is not the first language for any of both parts. That's when most deals either fluke or neither part can effectively communicate their needs and expectations. "Just useless. That kind of service is extremely harmful for professional communications among businesses. I cannot imagine of the consequences of using a free machine translation for closing a deal… Language is something completely inherent to the human being, and a human should be the only one to be able to gap the bridge between to parts who cannot understand each other. Besides, contrary to common belief, professional translators do not make use of machine translation software."

What type of services could a company look for besides translation?

"There are many other services a linguist can offer to business. The most common after translation is interpretation, writing business proposals or literature such as booklets and brochure, being a communication liasion – that is to be the person in charge of every message between both parts in order to ensure communication, for instance, writing e-mails, booking hotel suites and restaurants, doing research on the foreing language country, anything our client cannot do by themselves in the foreign language. One of the most uncommon – and the one I enjoy the most, is our cultural awareness service, and this may be one of the most sensitive of all our services. Our clients, before arriving to the foreign country, call us for a consultation where we help them to avoid a cultural clash and to develop a sense of the foreign culture."
