San Antonio Clinical Research Companies Expand to Four New Markets
Synergyst Research and Discovery Clinical Trials recently announced the expansion of their clinical research services across the South to Houston, Dallas, Austin and Atlanta.
Synergyst Research partners with physician groups to secure the most cutting edge clinical research studies tailored to the practice specialty, while Discovery Clinical Trials focuses on independent research centers in partnership with physicians. As their expansion plans move forward, the companies expect to hire additional personnel to keep up with the double digit growth. The companies provide marketing, legal, financial, recruitment and regulatory services to strengthen and increase physician groups clinical research capabilities. Today, they are both leaders in helping physicians to participate in clinical research. They have contracted with more than 300 physicians nation-wide and have placed more than 400 trials to date, representing over $20 million in revenue to physicians.
“Our expansion cities offer a great patient population base that pharmaceutical sponsors are looking for when selecting sites for participation. Also, some of the country’s premier physicians and clinics are located in those cities and few of them participate in clinical research,” said Trudy Madan, Chief Executive Officer of Synergyst Research. “This is why we are focusing on Houston, Dallas, Austin and Atlanta as part of our strategic expansion.”
With declining third party reimbursement rates, physicians are looking for additional revenue sources to help defray the costs of delivering high quality medical care. Research helps to diversify physician practice revenue and supply much needed care for patients who may not afford or qualify for medical insurance.
“Research is rewarding to those that participate in it. Not only is the physician helping determine the future safety and efficacy of drugs that reach the market place, but for many clinical trial patients, they get free medical care that otherwise would not have been available to them as well as access to some of the most cutting edge products prior to reaching the market place,” Madan said.
What is Clinical Research?
A clinical trial is a comparison test of an experimental medication or medical treatment versus the standard treatment, another medication/treatment, or placebo (inactive look-a-like pill). In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to prove the safety and efficacy of medications or treatments prior to receiving approval to sell their product in the public market place. Clinical trials vary greatly in size depending upon the phase of research.
For pharmaceuticals, clinical trials are commonly classified into four phases:
• Phase I trials are the first stage of testing in human subjects and normally include a small (20-80) group of healthy volunteers.
• Phase II trials are performed on larger groups (20-300) and are designed to assess how well the drug works. These take place only after the initial safety of the study drug has been confirmed in Phase I trials.
• Phase III studies are randomized controlled multicenter trials on large patient groups (300–3,000 or more depending upon the disease/medical condition studied) and are aimed at being the definitive assessment of how effective the drug is, in comparison with current 'gold standard' treatment.
• Phase IV trials involve the safety surveillance and ongoing technical support of a drug after it receives permission to be sold.
Synergyst Research LLC and Discovery Clinical Trials, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, are privately held companies which represent premier physician groups within various specialties located in twelve markets throughout the United States. Synergyst Research and Discovery Clinical Trials partner with community-based physicians who want to grow their practices through participation in clinical research. The companies promote physicians to sponsor clinical trials and assists physicians in the study start-up process to diversify practice revenue and assist in finding new treatments and cures for patients.
