Oct. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- (RALEIGH, NC) – Dr. Christopher Andrew, featured this morning on National Public Radio concerning his long-awaited authorized history of MI5 - Britain's domestic spy agency - will appear in Raleigh, NC, Saturday, November 14, for a noon to 2 p.m. book-signing at Quail Ridge Books and a private dinner party that evening as the guest of long-time friend Bernie Reeves, editor and publisher of Raleigh Metro Magazine.

Andrew will be touring major US cities to promote Defense of the Realm -- or Defend the Realm in America -- and will make a side trip to Raleigh where Reeves founded the Raleigh Spy Conference in 2003 (www.raleighspyconference.com).

Says Reeves: “I invited Chris to UNC-Chapel Hill in 1986 well before his current status as the world’s leading intelligence scholar. I was fortunate to be close to him as he rose to prominence in the field. He was the inspiration for the Raleigh Spy Conference.”

The British Security Service (MI5) opened its secret archives to Dr. Andrew, a first for any Western spy agency. Released this month in UK, the book reveals the precise role of MI5 from 1909 through two world wars, the Cold War and the war on terrorism.

Names are named, along with the failures and triumphs of Britain’s most secret security agency. With the exception of ongoing investigations, no restrictions were placed on Andrew’s access to the closely guarded sensitive files, including the identities of previously unknown enemies and the truth behind notorious events over the past century affecting national security in the UK and the West.

Published by Alfred A. Knopf, Defend The Realm contains 32 pages of pictures, many never before published, and 25 documents illustrating the inner workings of MI5.

Andrew co-authored KGB:The Inside Story with KGB double agent Oleg Gordievsky; and the two-volume Mitrokhin Archive with former KGB officer Vasili Mitrokhin. These works are considered the seminal texts for intelligence scholars. Andrew was the keynote speaker for the first Raleigh Spy Conference in 2003.
