Oct. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- Returnil today released the final edition of Returnil Virtual System 2010, a next generation security product that uses a combination of virtualization and antivirus technologies to protect computers against both malicious threats and unwanted system changes – a unique technology that can detect and remove malware that's never been seen before.

This new product “marks a significant shift in the way the traditional security products are protecting computer users from cyber crime and undesirable system changes,” according to Returnil. Upon installation, RVS 2010 automatically scans the system for viruses and other malicious software. Should any infections be found, RVS 2010 will remove them in much the same manner as any other antivirus solution. But that is where the similarity between RVS 2010 and other security solutions ends. Once the system has been confirmed to be free from malware, RVS 2010 clones (copies) the system partition and runs the cloned copy in a virtual machine. Users are automatically booted into the virtual machine and perform their day-to-day work within the virtual environment, rather than using the underlying operating system. While users are working within the virtual environment, the operating system is held in an entirely unassailable and isolated environment. The virtual system persists only for the duration of the session, with a new virtual system being created each time the system is restarted. Consequently, a simple restart will eradicate any malicious software that may have been installed on the virtual system.

CEO of Returnil Fernando Francisco compared the system to a Science Fiction starship: “use RVS 2010 like the protective shields when fighting the enemy and turn them off again when traveling in a friendlier space.” RVS 2010 includes a System Safe that allows the protection to be turned ON and OFF easily. For example, when using Web-based applications, such as Google Apps, or playing online games, it is recommended that users turn the protection ON all the time. Whether users try to make an unwise change to the computers settings, download a malicious program, or become a victim of a malware infection; they simply need to restart their system and it will be restored to its original and clean state.

Francisco went on to highlight some features in the new RVS 2010. The Virus Guard feature provides both malware detection and blocking. Where traditional security solutions suffer from not being able to do anything about the activation of malware, RVS 2010 provides the most important feature users can have in the fight to keep their systems clean: reduced time to removal of dangerous content. Not limited to this, but RVS 2010 also provides the network administrator with a powerful tool, the Returnil Commander. It provides scalable, centralized and remote client control and management service.

“Returnil is in a unique position to bring this combined approach (virtualization and antimalware) to market due to our installed base and the fact that we have had teams of engineers developing and refining this technology for the past two years,” said Michael Wood, Returnil Vice President, Product Management. “No other vendor's approach to consumer, public access and educational environments protection comes close. Our new approach changes the rules by both enhancing traditional security techniques to make them more effective and by making it dramatically more difficult for attackers to infect computers.”

According to Returnil, the release of RVS 2010 is just the first step towards a truly malware-free future where Returnil will introduce an Advanced Monitor System, a Multi-state Restore capability, and a new concept code-named Distributed Immunity. The upcoming editions will use a hybrid protection model of existing signature-based detection for known threats and reputation-based malware detection. The security software will use reputation-based or signature-based detection as appropriate. The reputation-based malware detection will be performed by an Advanced Monitor System, which blocks any process demonstrating behavior that has previously been defined as malicious and will report processes with unrecognized behavior to the central Artificial Intelligence systems. Thus, anything new or with substantially different behavior from before is processed by the Artificial Intelligence systems. Indeterminate items are continuously monitored by the Artificial Intelligence system learning engines and are subsequently categorized. In this matter, if the Advanced Monitor System detects bad behavior, it will immediately and automatically restore the computer to the latest clean state. Returnil anticipates the Beta release of this new generation product early 2010.
