Sept. 26, 2009 - PRLog -- Cash-strapped folks nowadays are looking everywhere for a little bit of extra change. They are looking under their mattresses, selling spare cars, and working longer hours.
But one area that few people look at is that of toys and games. Few people tend to think that their old childhood toys and games may have any kind of worth. But in the minds of interested buyers, that toy gathering dust in your attic may be worth $100 or more.
The Value of Toys Is In the Eye Of The Beholder
Who would think that old G.I. Joe's, Barbies, Tinkertoys, Erector Sets, board games, tin and metal toys, Cabbage Patch kids, and other might have some kind of value on today's market? When they were new, these toys and games sold for between $10 and $25. If these describe your old toys and you have never looked at them for the last decade, they may not seem very valuable to you personally.
But other people see it differently. For some people, a 20 year old G.I. Joe brings back memories of a happy childhood. Or, other people want to find the old board game Operation or Life or Twister and share with their own children. In these cases, the value of the object is determined by the person who wants the object.
Old tin toys keep getting more and more valuable as the years go by, especially Japanese metal toys from the 1960s like robots.
Be Careful of Devaluing Your Toys
But how do you go about selling your toys online and getting a decent price for them? The first thing to do is not to undervalue these toys. If the scenario described above sounds like you, then you are in grave danger for listing a seriously low price for your toys.
Rather than consulting Kovel's and antique guides, go to the marketplace itself and find out what people are really paying for these toys. Chekkout, Sell It For Free.
Don't Repair Old Toys?
Also, be careful about what you do to the toy before presenting it to interested buyers. While it may seem natural to repair any broken toys, you must keep in mind that many toy and game collectors are what you might call purists. They would rather have a broken toy in its pure, unrestored state than they would have a fixed toy that has been recently put back together or extensively cleaned.
This does not mean that you should not clean the toys before showing them. All dust should be removed with a clean cloth or brush. If there is dirt that is difficult to remove, be careful about taking it off with harsh cleaners or solvents because doing so may also remove paint and varnish.
Original Toy Packaging is Always Good
Finally, if you have any original packaging, do not discard it. As a general rule, toy collectors place a much higher value on a toy or game if it comes in its original packaging, no matter how badly damaged that packaging might be.
