By: BITS Web Design Services A Pinconning man and retired tool designer has invented an alternative; An 18-acre pond, overgrown with weeds behind Zarazua’s property, was all that was needed to trigger the tool designer to act. “I decided to invent my own tool to get rid of the weeds near docks and swim areas because there was nothing that was available on the market that was doing the job.” Zarazua indicated that many weed cutters are heavy and cumbersome to operate requiring twice as much effort on the part of the operator. Many tools require the operator to cut the weeds first and then use a rake to retrieve and remove the weeds. Wanting to avoid back strain, Zarazua knew he had to make a product that was lightweight and easy to handle. The Weedgator™ which has a patent pending was designed by Zarazua using a ballast system. When tossed into the water, holes in the tools handle let water into the device. The ballast method forces air up and out the handle allowing the Weedgator™ to glide forward at a 45 degree angle while it submerges. As the operator retrieves the Weedgator™, the water is replaced with air making the device lighter as it resurfaces. This method allows the tool to easily reach under docks and boats. The tool sports a five-foot handle made of polished marine grade aluminum. The curved blades are 14.5 inch-long and are made of flex steel and coated to resist corrosion. The blade length enables the Weedgator™ to clear a 31” path when being retrieved. The blades are curved upward to hold the weeds on the tool as it is extracted from the water. Alternatively, once out of the water, the operator simply needs turn the tool sideways for the weeds to slide effortlessly from the blades. The blades come with plastic blade guards and fold flat for easy storage. The Weedgator™ can be ordered at www.weedgator.net. The price is $139.99 and includes 25 feet of rope. The device works on milfoil, hydrilla, duckweed, lily pads and other aquatic weeds. The tool is not recommended for use on cattails.
