California's Newest Children's Museum Makes Big Impact

With over 28,000 sq ft of fun, Pretend City is a testament to the talents of 25 year old exhibit fabrication firm, MurphyCatton. From pretending to grocery shop or mailing a package, the children in Orange County are getting a tast of adulthood.

Sept. 23, 2009 - PRLog -- A monumental children’s museum, just off the coast of Laguna Beach in Orange County, California, has announced that its plan to open doors on August 30th, 2009 is on schedule. Planning for Pretend City Children’s Museum has been underway for the past twelve years. Exhibit fabricator MurphyCatton, Inc., was chosen to build the exhibition, while Kraemer Design was chosen to design the exhibition.  Both were selected out of a large group of national competitors to be the sole exhibit fabricator and designer of the elaborate children’s museum.  In collaboration, MurphyCatton and Kraemer design undertook the task of designing, building and installing this $11 million dollar project.

As the exhibit fabricator, MurphyCatton was faced with the extraordinary task of delivering a one-of-a-kind, custom experience to the children of Orange County. The museum, with a focus on helping young children understand how a city runs, takes a complete hands-on approach with interactive exhibits that show behind the scenes activities.  This interactive experience of role playing allows children to pretend they are parents, lawyers, firefighters, mailmen and much more.  By immersing children in a 28,000 square foot miniature city, the Pretend City/MurphyCatton team has developed an environment that provides a unique, true-to-life and educational experience.

Mark Catton, Executive V.P. of MurphyCatton says, “It took an enormous collaborative effort to bring this project to life. Working as the liaison between the museum and the city of Irvine to make sure every component of the project was up to the highest safety standards was an important process.” Among the obstacles of building a children’s museum that meets California safety standards includes structures that can withstand earthquakes.   MurphyCatton also had to overcome the challenge of creating a realistic environment that catered to the minds of its young visitors.

One of the primary reasons why MurphyCatton was selected as the sole fabricator for the Pretend City Children’s Museum was because of their impressive twenty-five year track record of taking their clients’ visions and turning them into extraordinary live experiences. Because no two children’s museums are alike, MurphyCatton has perfected the art of producing entirely custom exhibitions and environments that are safe, engaging and fun while paying close attention to detail and staying true to the design. Catton says, “Our diligent desire to deliver every aspect of what our clients envision is what keeps our customer relationships strong and lasting; Pretend City was no exception.”

The unique atmosphere of the Pretend City Children’s Museum required extensive research and the attention to detail that has been engrained in the MurphyCatton/Kraemer Design team. The lead project manager assigned to the Pretend City Children’s Museum was Colleen Crotty-Good. Crotty-Good says, “Something so detailed as the difference between traffic lights on the East coast compared to the West coast, was something our designers had to keep in mind.” Because of the size of this project, twelve years worth of planning and design went into the creation of this museum. MurphyCatton was intimately involved with Kraemer Design during the design development process, ensuring that the end result was executed with the level of quality that MurphyCatton is proud to represent.
