Chicago Holocaust Museum Opens Children's Exhibition

Kentucky firm faces rare challenge in creating Holocaust exhibition for an audience of 8-year-olds.

Sept. 18, 2009 - PRLog -- Exhibit fabrication firm MurphyCatton, Inc. was awarded the opportunity to fabricate the Make a Difference:  Miller Family Youth Exhibition at the Illinois Holocaust and Education Center.  The exhibition is geared towards developing the character education of children ages 8-11 by exposing them to critical questions resulting from the Holocaust.  Through the experience children are encouraged to explore their understanding of concepts such as respect and diversity.   The museum is expected to draw in over 250,000 visitors annually.

The Make a Difference: Miller Family Youth Exhibition, which was installed by MurphyCatton this past spring, aimed to provide a safe space for young visitors within the 65,000 square foot Chicago Holocaust Museum and Education Center.  The challenge of relating messages about the Holocaust tragedy to young children are monumental.  Design firm Kraemer Design+Production had to work closely with historians and the Museums educational staff to ensure every detail of the project was historically accurate and portrayed in a way that was educational, and certainly encouraging to young visitors. This haven for children also offers the young visitors a chance to think about different ways they can become more actively involved in their local and global communities.

Great care was taken in the interpretative development as to direct the exhibition’s focus towards a positive engagement of young visitors. The exhibition helps set learning standards at grade appropriate levels which encourage visitors to explore what it takes to care for themselves and others and to speak up for those being bullied or treated unfairly.

Among the exhibit’s attributes are interactive exhibits which depict survivors’ stories and inspirational messages designed and engineered by the Kraemer Design/MurphyCatton team of professionals.   Visitors can interact with a giant tree, fabricated using numerous small bark panels which represents the diversity of all human life.  In addition, MurphyCatton, Inc. themed the Center’s theater to match the larger exhibition.
