Sept. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- (Ocala, FL) – Fitness Tools LLC, a global leader in the innovation of exercise equipment design and human performance introduces a new exercise machine and a new type of exercise. The new patented machine is called the THOROTREAD. The new exercise is called Resistance Retro Walking.

Resistance Retro Walking is simply the exercise of pulling a weighted object while walking backwards on a treadmill. Multiple university clinical studies have indicated this is the most efficient and effective single exercise for total body fitness and wellness. Calorie burn was found to be over twice that of conventional commercial treadmills, ellipticals, and other machines at similar exertion levels. This allows you to get a high quality workout in a much shorter period of time than on other machines.

Inventor, designer and company founder Joe Ellis states. “This machine will forever change the way we think about exercise.  In the past we’ve had to do separate exercises for strength training different muscle groups and cardio workouts for weight loss and endurance.  Resistance Retro Walking is simultaneous total body strength and low impact cardio training in one easy to use machine.”

The THOROTREAD has taken over 4 years to develop from concept to production models. Ellis points out,  “ We’ve taken longer than normal to get this product to market because we have been so adamant about making this machine bulletproof as a commercial treadmill replacement for health clubs and gyms.”

Made in the U.S.A. with all American made parts, the THOROTREAD is actually two machines in one where the tread belt moves both forward and backwards. Upon starting the machine, the user selects either Resistance Retro Walking or Forward, mimicking commercial treadmills. In the retro mode, the user can walk backwards from .5 to 3.0 m.p.h. and from 0 to 8 degrees of backwards uphill elevation. Also in the backwards mode, the user can perform a variety of upper body strength exercises with the multi-angled pulling handle such as: bicep curls, tricep presses, shoulder rows, back rows, core crunches and more. In the forward mode, the user can walk / run forward from 0.5 to 12.0 m.p.h. and from 0 to 7 degrees of forward uphill elevation.

The two most common things that customer interviews and field testing revealed while developing the machine were:
1.   Keep it SIMPLE to use: The vast majority of users say they never use the complicated programs and features found on many commercial treadmills. Moreover, the few that did say they took the time to navigate bells and whistles did so in an attempt to take the mundane boredom out of walking or jogging forward. With the THOROTREAD, you simply select the exercise mode and press the start belt button. For newcomers there are straight forward usage instructions. Repeat users simply press the start belt button to skip the instructions and start exercising. You never get bored on the THOROTREAD because the machine fully engages the user to continually work different muscle groups. It’s so versatile that you never have to do the same workout twice.
2.   Display complete performance data: Many machines have one or two small screens with limited information that require the user to switch back and forth between screens to acquire all of their performance feedback. In a large font, the THOROTREAD, simultaneously displays elapsed time, speed, pulling load, grade, distance, heart rate, target heart rate and calories burned. Therefore, you can concentrate on getting a good workout and easily see all the information you need.
Other practical approaches were to only use a telemetry chest strap for heart rate monitoring. This is much more accurate than hand grip heart rate monitors and grip monitors force the user to keep their hands in one position making it uncomfortable to constantly monitor your heart rate and limit your exercise variety. For convenience, all the functions of the machine are controlled with a remote control located in the center of the pulling handle. This way you can adjust all the functions of the machine without interrupting your exercise.

The patented weight resistance system is real weight that changes the load with the push of a button while exercising. It starts out light enough for any beginner and has enough available resistance to challenge the fittest athlete.
The “cushion track” impact absorbing system makes forward walking / running safe and comfortable while the slow speeds required for Resistance Retro Walking are virtually impact free.

An industry leader since 1986 Joe Ellis holds multiple U.S. and International exercise equipment patents. Fitness Tools LLC plans to offer other unique and exciting new human performance products under the “THORO” brand family of products.
