The homeless community has spearheaded a grassroots campaign to have homelessness included in the city's non-discrimination policy.  After being inspired by an open letter to the Mayor and City Council asking for assistance by a fellow homeless person, the community rallied around their brother and created AshevilleUnited:  a grassroots campaign which promises to empower the community, improve the city through innovation, break down barriers that divide and isolate its citizens, and eliminate discrimination in employment, healthcare, education and housing.
A seemingly large task for such a disenfranchised community, but little by little they are gaining momentum, registering voters and collecting signatures on a petition they plan to hand deliver to the Mayor when they have reached their target goal.
"This campaign is about reminding people they live in the United States of America and reminding them Equality and Freedom from discrimination applies to everyone," said Kirk McFadden, a local resident who signed the petition at the Friday Drum Circle.
According the Asheville's ten year plan to end homlessness, "the homeless are among the least threatening group in our society and are more likely to be victims of crime."  It went further to state, "Many homeless people are among the working poor, and a relatively small percentage of them recieve government assistance."  "A study done in Chicago found that 39% of the homeless people interviewed had worked for some time during the previous month."
The ten year plan, which Mayor Bellamy believes strongly in, does not address discrimination in areas of employment, healthcare or education.  AshevilleUnited believes, as Mayor, Bellamy should know the roots of inequality are all the same.
Christian thought reinforces the absolute equality of all human beings and AshevilleUnited is counting on this community to help unite all of Asheville to address problems and create solutions for the entire community, including the homeless.
