Local StarShine Academy Schools join International Day of Peace Celebration with HARD ROCK CAFÉ PHOENIX

On September 21, 2009 at 6:30 pm, StarShine Academy International Schools in Phoenix, AZ joins Hard Rock Café and schools worldwide celebrating the United Nations’ global observance of the annual “International Day of Peace” by celebrating Humanity Rocks, culminating StarShine’s 11 Days of Peace & Sustainability.

Phoenix, AZ, September 21, 2009 6:30 p.m.:  StarShine Academy International Schools in Phoenix, Arizona, a world network of schools and teacher training to enhance curriculum for all children and teachers by focusing in the most needy areas, joins again with Hard Rock Café to produce the Humanity Rocks Concert with legendary Steve McCarty Band, former musician and songwriter with the Steve Miller Band to observe the International Day of Peace always on September 21. StarShine recently returned from training over 700 Liberian teachers on enhanced leadership, brain training and increasing effective use of curriculum. The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982. http://starshineacademy.org

“Our schools began the observance of Peace Day when we opened the first school after 9-11 as a part of StarShine’s 11 Days of Peace & Sustainability, where community leaders work directly with our students for an 11 Day focus to build a better community,” stated founder and CEO, Trish McCarty.  “The Hard Rock Café became our partner in this from the first year and each year the celebration has grown. We host an International Peace Art contest with the United Nations Cyberschoolbus. The final winners are announced during the evening. Steve McCarty, my husband and former band partner of the Steve Miller Band, always gets friends to come and play and donate signed guitars.”

In 2002 the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace. http://www.un.org/peace/peacebuilding/index.shtml
This year’s annual global observance of the International Day of Peace, September 21 has captured the attention of people, communities and nations worldwide. Based on last year’s reports, it is estimated that there will be over 10,000 events on the planet this year, sponsored by thousands of organizations, and that over 200 million people will participate. These will range from ceasefires, during which humanitarian aide is administered, to religious and interfaith services. They will include educational activities and volunteer programs; government proclamations, media events, and many types of activities by human rights, environmental, cultural and civic groups to draw attention to their particular aspect of ‘peacebuilding’; there will also be numerous private observances and events by many businesses and professionals. Noted celebrities as well as religious and government leaders historically speak out on behalf of this occasion. There will be vigils, performances, workshops, ceremonies, fundraising events, peace parties, community service projects, exhibits, walks, films, letter writing campaigns, peace fairs and much more. http://www.un.org/events/peaceday/2008/

By creating the International Day of Peace, the UN devoted itself to worldwide peace and encouraged all of mankind to work in cooperation for this goal. During the discussion of the U.N. Resolution that established the International Day of Peace, it was suggested that:
"Peace Day should be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples…This day will serve as a reminder to all peoples that our organization, with all its limitations, is a living instrument in the service of peace and should serve all of us here within the organization as a constantly pealing bell reminding us that our permanent commitment, above all interests or differences of any kind, is to build peace.

The Assembly declared that the Day be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day. It invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organizations and individuals to commemorate the Day in an appropriate manner, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in establishing a global community of peace building. Established by U.N. resolution "Peace Day" has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small.

Corporate sponsors for StarShine and the event include Toshiba, Macys, Staples, Safeway, HandsOn Greater Phoenix, Ear Candy, The Harp Foundation, Guitar Center and others.

About StarShine Academy International Schools
The StarShine Academy is a network of charter schools that are not-for-profit, with three in the Phoenix area focused on the most high-risk children k-12. The first school opened in 2002 to 28 students in a high drive-by shooting area, now a viable community. The newest school, StarShine Academy Global Transitions is the first public school in the United States devoted to supporting refugee children. Recognized by the United Nations as one of the best schools in the world that teach peace,  they have become a global leader for “Teachers as Community Leaders” training and have developed “StarShine Schools in a Box” for third world schools.

Trish McCarty, a former executive banker, formed the schools as an outreach, wanting to help end disparity in education for the rich versus the poor. A mother of four, Ms. McCarty led many corporate initiatives to improve opportunities for children worldwide to help to develop more vibrant communities, prior to forming the schools. Recently returning from training over 700 teachers in Liberia, she remarked, “Simply using the most current data on brain research, combined with cutting-edge technology, we can vastly improve the delivery of excellent learning tools to nearly everyone on the planet.” http://www.starshineacademy.org
