Sept. 10, 2009 - PRLog -- The efficiency of mobile web surfing has been thrown into doubt this week with clarifications needed regarding the speed of advertised broadband.

A mobile website has confirmed that following extensive testing of broadband connections from a number of the UK’s major mobile networks, the advertised speed is much faster than the average download speed received.

Across Britain’s five mobile operators, Vodafone, 3, Orange, O2 and T-Mobile, the study confirmed that the physical average download speed was recorded at 1.1 megabytes per second. This is somewhat misleading for the consumer, with some companies advertising download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps.

The research has raised claims for Ofcom to force Britain’s mobile operators to clarify the average download speeds available via mobile. The Ofcom regulators are the only group that can enforce such clarification and until such moves are taken, it is likely that users will continue to receive vastly slower download rates to their phones and accessories (http://www.foneshop.com).

In a recent survey of mobile broadband users, T-Mobile (http://www.foneshop.com/t-mobile) came out top of the pile. However, the Deutsche Telekom-managed operation are one of the main culprits of slow download rates, with an average of 0.9Mbps in comparison to their advertised speeds of up to 4.5Mbps.

It is a universal problem that appears to be affecting the quicker use of mobile phones and accessories. 3 also claims to offer download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps but is currently averaging 1.2Mbps. Meanwhile Orange (http://www.foneshop.com/orange) and O2 also advertise broadband speeds of up to 3.6Mbps and are only averaging 1.1Mbps and 1.0Mbps each.

There is an undeniable concern that mobile consumers are not currently receiving the quality of mobile broadband that has been promised. Ofcom has revealed that they will be monitoring the situation carefully over the coming months, particularly after this week’s outlined merger between Orange and T-Mobile which could give them a significant monopoly of web mobile coverage.
