Announcement: Play 4 Iran Social Game With A Conscience Launches On Twitter

The latest game to hit Twitter is seeking to add an extra dimension to the social gaming concept - by trying to employ the contest to attract attention and garner support for the ongoing crisis in Iran

Sept. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- Somewhere, CA, United States (play4iran.com - September 6, 2009) Social gaming as a fun - sometimes addictive - new craze on Twitter is still on an upward trend with new arrivals almost every week. The latest game about to launch is seeking to add an extra dimension to the social gaming concept - by trying to employ the game to attract attention and garner support for the ongoing crisis in Iran[1].

Watch out for Play 4 Iran (http://www.play4iran.com) a debut game sponsored by the website of 'Twitter sibling' (if there is such a thing?) @Pray4Iran (http://pray4iran.org)[2]. Play 4 Iran is a simple 'tag you're it' game where players register to get added to the scoreboard, and then submit names of other Twitter users with the #IranElection hashtag[3] in order to score points.

Brainchild of Twitter pals @greenthumbnails and @lissnup, Play 4 Iran is one of several projects the pair have collaborated on. Says developer @greenthumbnails: "One of the most popular ways of showing support for the Green Movement in Iran is to turn your Twitter profile picture green. To date tens of thousands of Twitter members have chosen a green profile picture. However, no-one actually knows just how many of the millions of Twitter accounts are sporting green avatars. This contest will hopefully help encourage even more people on Twitter to support the Green Movement in Iran by adding green to their profile image, and help get an estimate of how many supporters there are."

Options include adding a green tone to the entire image, adding a green ribbon, candle, or stripe, or choosing from a selection of popular choices.

The contest starts 23:00 Eastern Standard time (EST) Saturday, September 5, 2009 and will end at 23:59 Eastern Standard time (EST) Wednesday, 23 September 2009.

You can sign up for Play 4 Iran by receiving a tweet invite or visiting http://play4iran.com and logging in with your Twitter credentials.

[2] Pray 4 Iran started at the end of July and is a goodwill effort aimed at the group within the Twitter commuity who follow the #Iranelection hashtag. The weekly 'sermon' is broadcast each Friday as a series of tweets from the @Pray4Iran user timeline, and has already begun to attract followers. Pray 4 Iran is intentionally multi-faith  and non-denominational, to avoid the usual friction sparked by any mention of religion in what is essentially a political forum. Calling everyone on Twitter to 'Friday Prayers' is an attempt to reunite everyone to the original goal of supporting those in Iran.

[3] The #IranElection hashtag started making Twitter history shortly after the June 12 2009 Iranian Presidential Elections. Because of the worldwide support for Iran shown by members of the Twitter community, it continues to show up on the Trending Topics list after almost 3 months.

The goal of Play 4 Iran is to increase awareness of Iran's ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy.

People in Iran have been heartened and even overwhelmed by the heartfelt messages of support and sympathy that they have received via Twitter and worldwide across the internet. It creates a feeling of duty to do all that we can to ensure that these brave people, living under such terrifying conditions, continue to witness our ongoing support.

We hope that this contest will attract some media attention. All Iran has ever asked is that we continue to witness to their story, and make sure the world outside of Iran doesn't not forget them. They have never asked for sanctions, money, military intervention or any other form of interference. We are here. We are Iran.
