Sept. 5, 2009 - PRLog -- known to be a coveted honor recognizing excellence in theatre featuring African Americans, "A Salute To Black Theatre", rang true on Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Theatre located in Hollywood, California.  The event was hosted by, NAACP Award-Winner Loretta Devine (Broadway’s "Dreamgirls"). Writer and director Layon Gray graced the awards microphone for his third time. Winning in 2006 for his play “ The Girls Of Summer, 2008 with his mega hit play Meet Me At The Oak, and now with his historical drama Black Angels Over Tuskegee.

Layon continues to make his mark in traditional African American theater with Black Angels Over Tuskegee. His natural flow for dialogue has been compared to August Wilson’s work by many critics and audiences on the east and west coast. As he truly appreciates the compliments, he states “ my goal is continue to tell true honest stories in my own voice that will move a generation. “ Born and raised in Louisiana, he has quickly risen as one of Los Angeles premiere playwrights winning several writing and directing awards Most of his works are in development as major motion pictures. When asked what new play he is working on he replied “ I’m putting the finishing touches to my epic play “American South” – a true story set during slavery in Louisiana about my mother’s side of the family, and also The Harlem Rens” a story about the 1939 all black - basketball team Which will be performed by his theater company The Black Gents Of Hollywood.  Both plays are scheduled for 2010 premieres.
