To Aerate a lawn means to supply the soil with air. Soil that lacks sufficient air can result in slow growth, bald spots, excess irrigation runoff, shallow root systems, and a lawn that's highly vulnerable to insects, disease, and heat damage.

Aeration improves the lawn's ability to absorb water and fertilizer. Grass roots also need air as well as water and nutrients fertilizer. The availability of air to the roots can help prevent grass from a poisonous build-up of the various chemical processes that occur in the individual grass plants.

An aerator that pulls plugs (cores) is more effective than one that simply punches holes. An aerator that punches holes can actually further compact the soil.

Soil compaction and the build-up of lawn thatch are the most common causes of air-deficient soil. Grass growth in compacted soil has shallow root development, a substantial decrease in the number of grass plants per square foot, and an inability to adequately use applied fertilizers.

The benefits of aeration are an increase in:
•Growth rate of the grass resulting in an improvement in its ability to withstand and recover from pedestrian use and drought
•Ability of water and fertilizer to penetrate into the soil to the grass roots
•Absorption rate from irrigation
•Root growth activity contributing to the strength and health of the grass
•Capability of bacteria present in the soil to break down and decompose the thatch layer thereby increasing the soils ability to hold adequate amounts of moisture between waterings
•Lawn's ability to withstand low water situations and heat stress
Aeration is a technique best applied in late summer or early fall for cool season grasses and in the spring for warm season grasses. This can also be a good time to overseed and fertilize the aerated lawn.

Aeration should be part of your grounds maintenance program. Its an inexpensive way to improve a lawn's health and appearance.
