Sept. 1, 2009 - PRLog -- Minister for Trade, Simon Crean, today congratulated Brisbane-based manufacturer Centor on the launch this week of its Australian invention - a fully retractable, flyscreen and solar control blind.

"This is an excellent example of Australian research and design capability - a locally manufactured invention that will reduce carbon emissions and allow people worldwide to enjoy an Australian outdoor lifestyle," Mr Crean said.

Centor Managing Director, Mr Nigel Spork, said building designers will be able to use this world-first invention on large windows and doors to make the most of natural light, control heat gain during summer, reduce heat loss in winter, thereby reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems.

"We are committed to international success and expect our European sales for August 2009 to be a company record, and we have high hope for our efforts in North America," Mr Spork said.

The 60-year-old family business operates in four continents and employs around 130 staff.

Mr Crean commented that because Australia's domestic market is small, it is vital that local businesses are able to access a range of production capabilities - both onshore and offshore - to achieve the scale of production necessary for global success.

"This is certainly true of many manufacturing businesses, including Centor, who are increasingly utilising global production capabilities to help them compete internationally," said Mr Crean.

"This willingness to push into overseas markets and establish a presence overseas is an important element of maintaining Australia's engagement with the global economy and is a strategy that the Government supports."

The Minister for Trade is in Brisbane to attend a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Ministerial Council on International Trade on 6-7 August, hosted by the Queensland Government.
