Aug. 29, 2009 - PRLog -- South Molton, North Devon, UK, Much of Britain's transport network will bring misery to the hundreds of thousands of people on the move this August bank holiday as more and more of us grab a last minute break to the coast or countryside. The AA has deployed an extra 30 units to the region for the weekend.

With millions of British residents holidaying in the UK or 'staycationing' the South West and Cornwall and Devon in particular are braced for a huge increase in traffic and visitor numbers. Of course this is great news for accommodation providers and businesses that rely on tourism. Richard Harrison owner of Collacott Holiday Cottages in Devon explains: "Whilst we usually have good occupancy in the summer months this year has been especially good and this bank holiday has been completely booked out for months. We are getting a lot of feedback along the lines of our customers deciding to holiday in the UK this year because of the adverse economic climate."

A survey by Visit Devon has said that the majority of holiday cottage and other holiday accommodation owners in Devon were reporting 100 per cent occupancy for the bank holiday weekend. The survey also concluded that 60 per cent of these businesses reported better trade this year than last.

Many tourism experts have noted that whilst many luck accommodation providers have been booked out months in advance the general trend appears to be that more of us are taking short breaks in the UK and that more and more these breaks tend to be arranged at the last minute. This could be seen as lapping up the last minute flight abroad market which historically is what constitutes a significant amount of UK holidays which is suffering this year due to the credit crunch, a weak pound and increased flight costs.
