PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 Price Cuts To Spark Twin Galaxies Competition?

International Scorekeeping Organization Expecting Console Price Wars to Spark As Much Competition With Gamers As With Marketplace

Aug. 27, 2009 - PRLog -- In an effort to gain sales as the summer months of 2009 come to close, the manufacturers of the second and third place gaming consoles have announced price cuts in an effort to claim more of the market share.

Sony recently unveiled their new PlayStation Slim, bringing the price of the PlayStation 3 consoles down to $299 in a fresh and smaller form.  Not to be outdone, Microsoft has followed suit, dropping the price of their XBox 360 Elite game console to $299 and XBox 360 Pro console to $249.

Twin Galaxies, the only official scorekeeping organization for the world of video gaming, is watching carefully.  Founded in 1981, Twin Galaxies is recognized by Guinness World Records, G4tv, and numerous other sources as the only official judges of high score and World Record rankings in electronic games.  Once most famous for their work in classic games due to films such as "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" and others, Twin Galaxies has seen a huge influx of player participation on all of the newest game consoles throughout 2009.

Much like the game sales market has been for much of the current generation of consoles, the majority of the modern-day influx of score submissions to Twin Galaxies throughout 2009 has been on the top-selling Nintendo Wii and hit titles on the console like "Wii Sports Resort", "Punch-Out!!", "Wii Fit" and "Mario Kart Wii".

With the new price cut by Nintendo's rivals putting the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 into reach by more gamers, Twin Galaxies is preparing to see gamer competition on these two consoles increase.

"Historically speaking, $250 to $300 has always been the sweet spot price point of any game console," said Patrick Scott Patterson, Twin Galaxies Director of Marketing. "I think both consoles will now be able to close the gap on Nintendo, and as the consoles end up in more gamers hands, I expect Twin Galaxies to see increased competition on them as well."

While many XBox and PS3 game titles give gamers the option to land rankings in online leaderboards that don't involve Twin Galaxies, Patterson feels gamers on these consoles will still find their way over.

"There's no checks and balances on those leaderboards," Patterson added. "They are full of scores where modded systems, cheat codes, and point scabbing methods were used.  Twin Galaxies method of verification elminates the concern over the integrity of those leaderboards by requiring submissions to be recorded in full or witnessed, and I think that will appeal greatly to an expanded fan base for the XBox and PlayStation."
