Aug. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- NAHB Green adds third Green Verifier in Washington State

Clinton (Whidbey Island), Washington, Aug.  2009 - Outline Studio is proud to announce that Aaron Coates CPBD, LEED AP, has been designated as a fully accredited NAHB Green Building Verifier. Being the first in Island County and third in Washington State, Aaron views this recent credential as another opportunity to promote the growth of green, sustainable design and development.

The National Association of Home Builders, NAHB Green Certification program is one of the first programs in the U.S. to require third-party verification for all of their award certificates from Bronze to Emerald. This is to ensure standards and guidelines are meet and documented during the entire construction process. According to Coates, “While green building has been growing in popularity in recent years, standardization and oversight at the residential level have just started making head-way. What makes this green certification different from others is that it is available to anyone building a house or developing land.”

Under the NAHB Green Building Program, single-family residences can be certified under NAHB’s Model Green Building Guidelines or ANSI approved ICC- 2008 National Green Building Standard. No self-certification is permitted and all levels require independent verifier approval. Everything from water and energy use, manufacturers health and safety, and regionally appropriate materials are addressed in the certification, with more details available at www.nahbgreen.com.

Coates has been a student and practitioner of sustainable design solutions for almost twenty years. His interest in sustainable design was fostered during an extended residency at Arcosanti, Paulo Soleri’s Urban Laboratory, where he worked on passive solar and silt cast projects while studying arcology. Prior to forming Outline Studio in 2003, Coates honed his design skills as a construction project manager for design build and architectural millwork firms. Here he gained a deeper appreciation for the skill and sacrifice that goes into producing some of the country’s finest workmanship.

In his work as a building designer, Coates specializes in residential projects that honor local architectural vernacular while utilizing modern, recycled, or alternative materials. Aaron Coates, CPBD, LEED AP is striving to make green certification a standard in the building and remodeling industry.
