Valerie Thompson Racing attempts her Third Land Speed Record - Bonneville Salt Flats

Aug. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- Valerie Thompson to pilot Wink Eller Motorsport’s “Spirit of Cliff Gullett” Entry at Bonneville Salt Flats

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Two-time land speed record holder, Team Marines Racing Member and current NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Valerie Thompson has reached an agreement with Wink Eller Motorsports to ride the Spirit of Cliff Gullett motorcycle entry at the 5th Annual BUB Speed Trials, August 29 - September 3 at the Utah’s famed Bonneville Salt Flats.

Thompson will attempt to add a third land speed record to her résumé aboard the bike, which honors the memory of Eller’s close friend, Cliff Gullett, who tragically lost his life in a racing accident in 2008, Thompson will attempt to break a record in the A-PF, 3,000cc class. Thompson will be riding a bike that has set 41 land speed records, has been featured in numerous publications, and is a nominee for the Land Speed Hall of Fame.

“We miss Cliff and think about him often,” said Eller, who is also a holder of 57 different land speed records. “He was a great racer and a better friend.  He was the last person to ride bike No. 127 and we are proud to name it in his honor.

“I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have on the No. 127 bike than Valerie Thompson,” Eller continued. “I remember her first trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats. She was extremely focused and very fast. She came to me then, we talked about what it takes to go fast there, and she picked it up right away and now has two records of her own.  She has a bright future in racing and we are proud to be associated with her”

Thompson, who has been called, “America’s high speed sweetheart, added, “Wink is legend in the sport and to have the opportunity to ride one of his bikes and honor Cliff’s memory is a tremendous privilege. Our goal is to break the 200-mph barrier and become the first in our class to do so. Racing on the salt requires a lot of finesse, concentration and horsepower and we have all three. I believe we have an excellent chance to shatter the old record”

Thompson and Eller will begin testing in August and expect to make a big impact at the event, which is sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association.
