Aug. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- Drying herbs can be very calming and beneficial if done properly. In modern times people use dehydrators or ovens which bost cost money to use. Today we are going to discuss drying fresh herbs without electricity. We will be drying herbs the natural way using only the sun and air.

We will first talk about drying plants and leaves. There is a number of ways to do this but today we will go over just a few. If you are drying larger herbs or herbs that are still ona stock you can pull them together in a bunch and hang them from the ceiling in either your shed or basement. It is best to do this in an area that get's adequate airflow. This does take time anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks depending on the density of the plant and the amount of airflow.

Another method fro drying leaves is to lay them out onn a screen such as a house screen (I found a bunch of old window screens at a tag sale and they work great). Once you have your herbs arranged you can stick them out in the sun to dry. This works best when there is a slight breeze. This method works fairly quick comapard to the hanging method but is not always an option.

The best method that works for me is to put the herbs on a screen or hang them in a bunch inside my car with the window cracked on a nice sunny day. This may sound crazy but it works like a dehydrator. The temperature inside your car gets up over 100 usually and provides a great ready made drying room. Drying herbs inside a car is by far the quickest method I have found. I have even installed a poll in the back of my Escort wagon to hang herbs from.

Drying roots is a little more tricky. It is best to slice fresh roots up into small pieces and lay them o a piece of paper on a cookie sheet. I then take the cookie sheet with the cut up fresh roots and set them in my car or out in the sun.

For rainy days the only method is to hang the herbs inside and if you are running a dehumidifier all the better.
