Local Area Automotive Dealers Feel an Increase in Sales Thanks to "Cash for Clunkers" Program

Many Daytona Beach residents are trading in their old vehicles for new and receiving cash back from the government thanks to the "Cash for Clunkers" Program which began last month.

Aug. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- Colleen Nolan of Daytona Beach, Florida, said she’s thrilled with his new Chevrolet Silverado truck she purchased from New Smyrna Chevrolet through the "cash for clunkers" program. Although she was a little sad to say goodbye to her 1990 Ford 150.
"I told my sales lady Barbara, don't call it a clunker," Nolan said of the black truck she had for almost 20 years.
Yes, it had 383,000 miles on it, but it still ran like a champ, Nolan said. "The most important thing I did was make sure I kept up with my truck’s service.  I changed my oil every 3,000 miles or so right here at the dealership.”
“I needed new brakes, so when I brought my truck in last week I looked at new vehicles on the lot. I could not resist the idea of owning a new vehicle -- at a bargain-basement price -- was too much to resist” Nolan commented.
"I bought another black truck, crew-cab Silverado, four-door," Nolan said, even though she originally wanted an extended cab.
Her old gas-guzzling truck qualified for the program's miles-per-gallon requirements, and while the Silverado doesn't sip gas, it still qualified for the fuel efficiency standard.
"The truck was listed for $31,000, and they had this employee pricing [in which customers pay what dealership employees pay]; it came in at $25,000. She gave me $4,000 for my Ford. I paid, like, $21,000.
"I called my old Ford F150 Max. I used to tell everyone the reason why I kept it so long was because it was one of the longest relationships I’ve ever had. I figured it was time to move on."
Business at the dealership has tripled since the program started about a week ago, commented Jack Holcomb, owner, New Smyrna Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, Your Little Cheaper Dealer.
"So, it's created frenzy. The market seems to be heading back to where it was."
Colleen Nolan of Daytona Beach said although government programs often come with a lot of red tape, people can get a good deal with the clunker program, if they look under the hood.
"I think it's a real good program. It's not a fluke," she said.
