Aug. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- Portsmouth & England goalkeeper David James has been “in the pink” this week, launching a special limited edition club shirt that has been produced in aid of charity.

Only 200 of the shirts have been produced and each will be personally signed by James and then sold in aid of Wessex Cancer Trust, a charity with which the club already enjoys close links.

“Portsmouth is a club that prides itself on being close to the community,” says James. “And if we can do something like this and help boost fundraising for such a great charity then I’m delighted to be involved.”

Wessex Cancer Trust is an independent charity that supports many aspects of cancer care, including leading edge research, patient facilities, equipment, patient grants, complementary therapy and counselling services.

Sally Hall, Chief Executive of Wessex Cancer Trust comments: “Our partnership with Portsmouth Football Club has been pivotal to our growth in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas, and we truly feel a real belonging to this dynamic Club. Everyone, from the management, staff and players of Portsmouth Football Club, has welcomed this collaboration with the Wessex Cancer Trust and we aim to take every opportunity to work together to make a real difference to peoples lives.”

Cancer is the leading cause of premature death in Portsmouth. The city has a higher mortality rate from cancer in general than the national and regional average, with higher than average death rates from lung cancer and higher than average incidences of skin cancer. Moreover, fewer than average women in Portsmouth in the eligible age groups get themselves screened for either breast cancer or cervical cancer, which is why the work of the Trust is so important.

The shirts will be available via the main club shop.

Ends.
