Wrestling Injury Gives Birth To Chiropractor

Interview with Dr. Rick Brescia of New Horizons Family Chiropractic in Frankfort, IL - regarding his passion for the chiropractic philosophy and use of the Gonstead System in his office.

July 21, 2009 - PRLog -- When you first meet Dr. Rick Brescia, you cannot help but feel that you are in good hands. His drive to help people and knowledge of the chiropractic are not the only things that make clients feel at ease. It’s his passion for the root philosophy of Chiropractic itself – a philosophy that seeks to help people reach their full innate potential by removing interference between the brain and the rest of the body. “I feel that with chiropractic care, I can help improve everyone’s quality of life; to help those individuals live lives that are less stressful and more meaningful.” Brescia states “It’s a matter of compassion for me. I believe that there is only one way for the body to heal, and that is from within. Chiropractic care maximizes that innate ability for the body to heal itself by focusing on the engine that drives our bodies – the nervous system.”

Brescia makes a point not often considered by the general public.  Many think chiropractic care has to do with the bones of the back, but actually, chiropractic deals with nerves that the spinal column houses. “All the nerves in our body carry messages from the brain, through our spine, to the rest of the body.   If those messages are interfered with because of pressure on a nerve, it will decrease the way the body functions.  This decreases the ability for the body to adapt to its environment, and we eventually develop symptoms.” Brescia went on to explain that “misalignments in the spine that cause interference between the brain and the body are known as subluxations.  I use a very specific system in the office for finding the nerve pressure. It’s called the Gonstead System and is a very specific way of adjusting the spine so that the body begins to heal and function at an optimal level.”

The Gonstead System is unique, because it allows him check practice members for nerve pressure at every visit, and he only adjusts the vertebra that are causing nerve pressure. Therefore, each of Brescia ’s adjustments are extremely precise, maximizing their effectiveness for the individual. “Although results will vary from person to person, we’ve seen people in our practice whose primary care doctors have noted significant enough improvement to reduce their medications for various problems. We’ve also had clients who have noted improved breathing for things like emphysema, as well as heart function increase on stress tests,” Brescia said, adding that it just depends on how long nerves have been under pressure as to how fast improvements can be noticed. “We don’t claim to cure anyone’s health condition. What chiropractic does is help each individual reach their personal optimal health by adjusting those subluxations in the spine.”

Brescia is quick to add that he is not against medical doctors, as some chiropractors have been criticized for. “Doctors save lives everyday, and we should all thank them for that.  I believe that if they understood that the goal of pure chiropractic is to help maintain a healthy brain-body connection, that we’d have a better relationship with them,” he said. “Not all the nerves in the body are for pain. Only about 10% sense pain, the other 90% of our nerves control our muscles and our organs, so you can have a subluxation and feel fine. But chiropractic is not about feeling or pain, it’s about function. And improving the function of our bodies is what will give us a better quality of life.”

Brescia, who grew up in Frankfort , would likely be following in his accountant father’s family-business footsteps if not for experiencing a weightlifting injury during high school sports. “I was in a lot of pain and nothing seemed to help until I saw a chiropractor,” Brescia said, who continued with regular adjustments even after the pain was gone, crediting that ongoing course with his good health. “Then I went to visit a friend who was studying to be a chiropractor and I knew that becoming one myself was just the right thing to do because I care about people” he added, noting that his desire to help others probably stems from his parent’s instruction on The Golden Rule from an early age.

Although Dr. Brescia opened his practice on Frankfort Square Rd. in Frankfort last November, he just had his official Grand Opening for the community, which gave him a fun-filled forum to give tours of his office, complete with a variety of specialized tables, scanning and full-spine x-ray equipment. “I wanted to officially introduce the practice to my hometown community. But folks who are interested in chiropractic can drop by to see our office at anytime, and we’ll gladly explain what we do and why it’s important,” Brescia invite d. He is also interested in providing community health classes, at his own expense, to local businesses, non-profit organizations, and churches.
