July 21, 2009 - PRLog -- The NAACP, National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), and Carl Andrews & Associates joined forces on Wednesday July 15, 2009 to produce a fundraising event aptly titled Legends & Legacy: A Salute to 100 Years of Change.  In the midst of celebrating the NAACP’s Centennial Convention here in New York City, Legends & Legacy brought out top NAACP dignitaries, NBA greats of past and present, and fans and supporters of both organizations for an upscale affair to support the New York State Conference of the NAACP Branches.
The stage for this memorable night was set in the historic Gotham Hall in Midtown Manhattan. Gracing the red carpet for this event were NBA hall of famers and all-stars including like Bo Kimble, Cal Ramsey, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Eric Murdock, Tate George, and Tom “Satch” Sanders and many others.  Inside, the ballroom and ornate, stained-glass skylight, were lit in a warm amber glow and fresh, clean floral arrangements adorned tables. While VIP’s, sponsors and patrons, were treated to passed hors d’oeuvres and drinks, including a Remy Martin tasting bar, a silent auction featuring luxury items and sports memorabilia was on display to view and bid.
Hosting the awards ceremony was acclaimed journalist, Shon Gables. Praise for the Legends & Legacy Honorees and NAACP, and inspirational messages resonated by the Host and Charles D. Smith Jr., Executive Director of the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), and former NBA star.  Remarking on the success of the event Mr. Charles D. Smith Jr. stated "It is indeed an honor to have NBA Retired Players from the Legends of Basketball participate in an event that recognizes the accomplishments of the NAACP and our Legends. Men like Junior Bridegman, George Gervin, Bob Lanier, Mayor Kevin Johnson and future legend Chris Paul are shining examples of success both on and off the court.  As the NAACP celebrates its 100 year legacy, these gentlemen are direct beneficiaries of the NAACP's efforts toward social change. They have also laid a strong foundation of real life examples of what current athletes can do with their lives upon retiring from professional basketball."  Capping-off the awards ceremony was a special performance by Kathy Sledge, performing a special tribute to Michael Jackson.
In conclusion, Carl Andrews & Associates’ President, Carl Andrews, stated "Several years ago Charles Barkley made a statement that he wasn't a role model. He felt that athletes, although famous, should not be viewed as such; instead it should be parents, business leaders, community organizers, teachers etc. Tonight we honored 5 men who without question are both outstanding role models, athletes, and whose work and leadership have been exemplary. As we celebrate the centennial of the NAACP, we see these athletes as the product of 100 years of fighting for change."
Legends & Legacy’s sponsors included L’OREAL USA, Inc., Anheuser-Busch, Jeffries & Company Inc., Haier America, Remy Martin Cognac, NBA, NBA Players Association, White Rose, Siebert Branford Shank & Co. LLC, Global Strategy Group, Forest City Ratner Companies, and Loop Capital.
