Ms. Desmond has over twenty years experience in business administration and management.  She worked for Furman Selz in New York City's Financial District as an Assistant Vice President of Operations and Administration.  Subsequently, Ms. Desmond entered the healthcare industry serving as Executive Director of Physician Hospital Organizations at Meadowlands and Christ Hospitals negotiating managed care contracts.  She managed a community based  HIV/AIDS organization and Wayne Hematology Oncology, and served as Bayonne City Council Member at Large, Hudson County Deputy Clerk and Acting County Clerk.

Mary Jane has a long history of civic and community service, including board positions with Bayonne Community Mental Health Center, Bayonne Community Day Nursery, Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation, Bayonne Women's Health Center, Jersey City Connections, Bayonne Board of Education, Bayonne Housing Authority, Bayonne Insurance Commission, Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority, and has helped raised funds that supported many worthy local charities.  She also served as chairperson for The Coalition to Save Bayonne Medical Center for two years.
