Online Learning Dramatically Improves California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) Student Scores
As California State Superintendent of schools proclaims California students are steadily improving their CAHSEE scores, the BrainX learning system is cited as one of the reasons for the many student success stories throughout the state.
I am pleased that these results show that California students continue to rise to the challenge of higher expectations, and that nearly every subgroup of students in the Class of 2009 is showing improved passage rates if you compare the latest results to the Class of 2008 at the same point in time a year ago," O'Connell said.
While O'Connell offered praise to California teachers for their efforts in helping students pass the CAHSEE, many teachers offered praise to BrainX, a revolutionary online learning system that delivers significant improvement to student test, specifically for the CAHSEE.
Students and school administrators at Richland Continuation High School in Orange, CA who participated in a BrainX pilot program saw their scores improve an average of 50% to 89%.
“It’s Awesome!” exclaimed Richland student Briana Bagnaschi. “It helps me understand everything and I’m way better at math than I was before I started the program.”
Richland students used the BrainX system an average of 3 hours a week for 7 weeks before taking the CAHSEE along with other 10th and 12th grade students in the district, the pass rate for Richland students in the Math section of the exam was 89% compared to the district average of 50% for English Language Learners.
“This new proven learning system personalizes the online instruction to the needs of each student,” explained BrainX CEO Bruce Lewolt. “It leverages knowledge on how the brain forms long term memories to ensure that students don’t forget what they have learned.” This means that the knowledge students learn in September can be remembered months later when they take the CAHSEE. Chris Reider, Executive Director of Secondary Education for the Orange Unified School District observed, “Our prior experience with other learning software products had been that they typically produce smaller improvements than desired, and don’t work well with English Learners. This pilot demonstrated that the combination of the BrainX software, and the dedication of our teachers, can make a dramatic difference even with the most at risk students.”
With the primary purpose of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) being to improve student achievement standards in public high schools, all California public school students must satisfy the CAHSEE requirement in order to receive a high school diploma. There is a direct correlation between a student failing the CAHSEE exam and the likelihood of their dropping out of school.
Educators at the Orange Unified School District investigated ways in which they might raise student achievement levels on the Math and Language Arts CAHSEE exam for English Learner students. Results from their pilot of the BrainX learning solution indicate that this approach significantly improved the passing rates.
