Sonia Sotomayor’s Judicial Philosophy Scrutinized on July 5 Coral Ridge Hour

Fort Lauderdale, FL (July 1, 2009)–“You can still be proud of Judge Sotomayor’s story and what she has accomplished . . . and still be against her judicial philosophy.” That is the view of Steven Groves of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, one of many experts on the July 5 Coral Ridge Hour broadcast which scrutinizes the judicial philosophy of the Supreme Court nominee. http://www.coralridge.org/medialibrary/default.aspx?mediaID=CRH0927_F

The nationally televised program features experts who analyze statements by Sotomayor that raise concerns about whether she will uphold the Constitution as written, or substitute her personal views in making decisions.

Sotomayor said in 2001 that as a judge, “a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Mario Diaz, policy director for pro-family group Concerned Women for America and a Hispanic himself, labeled Sotomayor’s statement “insulting.”

“The mere premise of saying that you have a better judgment because you are a Latino or a woman really goes against the oath you take to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States,” Diaz said.

In another eyebrow-raising statement, Sotomayor told a Duke University audience in 2005 that the “Court of Appeals is where policy is made.”

“Policy is not supposed to be made in the Courts. That is the role of the legislature. The Court is to limit itself strictly to interpreting the law and upholding the Constitution,” stated Coral Ridge Hour host Dr. Jerry Newcombe.

“If her statement is representative of the kinds of decisions she would make, Judge Sotomayor will prove to be yet another activist judge whose legal views go completely against the principles of our Founders,” Newcombe said.

“Returning to Our Roots,” a sermon preached by Dr. D. James Kennedy, http://www.coralridge.org/medialibrary/default.aspx?media... precedes The Coral Ridge Hour news feature on Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
