Carl Tatz Design has recently completed home recording studio design work for both Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney of super group Rascall Flatts. Named the Grip II and The Panic Room II, they are both second outings for the Carl Tatz Design firm to provide world-class custom, personal home facilities for the band members. Info at: http://www.carltatzdesign.com.

The Grip II extends the legacy of Rascall Flatts founding member and bass player, Jay DeMarcus’ original Grip nearly doubling the square footage into a sprawling recording complex. It features a new control room housing a new SSL AWS Plus console in an Argosy Mirage desk anchored by a PhantomFocus System™ Three – Near Field.

Part of Jay’s guitar and bass arsenal is built against the rear control room wall/ axial mode absorber as a diffusive element and the side walls utilize acoustic louvered and mirrored modules. The new tracking room acoustics are enhanced with stone and diffusive/absorptive floating modules and two ISO booths one named “Phone Booth” with an actual pay phone. Also, “a spring loaded” remote amp closet and hidden computer closet round out some of the features of this remarkable facility.

The “Foyer Of Fame” with its glass door elevator give way to a separate production suite call “The Wine Cellar” with it’s own PFS-Four and a full blown screening lounge/man room with multiple plasma and LCD screens that are revealed behind an electric eleven-foot wide acoustically perforated cinema screen with a custom CTD/JBL Synthesis six woofered sound system.

The Panic Room II is the steroidial version of the original Panic Room designed for Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts. The initial primary consideration of this basement level studio was that it had to be sonically isolated from the master bedroom above.

Not only that but in its new incarnation, large main monitors were to be flush mounted in the front wall as part of a very powerful PhantomFocus System™ One – Dual. CTD designed a complex multi-layer ceiling structure using a custom barrier protocol that allowed 110dB sound levels from 80Hz down to 17Hz to be barely audible in the bedroom above.

A custom desk was designed to house a new SSL AWS Plus console and a large array of outboard gear. The tracking room with a high ceiling utilizes custom acoustic treatments along with diffusive elements from Auralex and RPG. Two adjacent ISO booths flank the tracking room and are separated by a glass wall.
