AA-PE wins "Excellence in Cultural and Linguistic Competency Award"

The American Academy of Physician Education announces it has received the prestigious "Excellence in Cultural and Linguistic Competency Award" from the Institute for Medical Quality for the interactive workshop activities on "Breaking Barriers to the Medical Management of Alzheimer's Disease in Latino Populations".

This series of six interactive workshops with key speaker Dr. Liliana Oakes (University of Texas Health Science Center, san Antonio) and supported by local moderators with expertise in working in Latino communities with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients was designed to break down language barriers and overcome cultural barriers to care through improved communication; understand the limitations of current screening tools and the implications for minority populations while teaching physicians to practice accurate dementia diagnosis in the office setting and understand the pros and cons of drug therapy, behavior management strategies and effective non-pharmacologic tools for caregivers.

AA-PE’s CEO, Dr. Jeffrey Hillier said “It is an honor to receive this award and very gratifying that the hard work of our staff and Dr Oakes and the moderators have been recognized in this way. We would like to acknowledge the independent medical education grant support of Eisai Inc. and Forest Research Institute that made it possible for us to develop and implement this activity in so many different locations. The extremely positive feedback from participating clinicians to Dr. Oakes’ innovative and highly interactive approach to education has encouraged us to expand the approach to additional locations in 2009 and 2010 and to new educational interventions in other disease states”.
