June 11, 2009 - PRLog -- Esprit Holidays, who specialise in family activity holidays with childcare to the Swiss, French and Austrian Alps, say the recession and recent reports that reveal Britain as the `fat capital of Europe’ are encouraging more and more families to consider healthier holidays and holidays where parents and kids can bond together and share healthy daytime activities such as cycling, rafting, climbing and walking.

The trend is expected to increase as with the publication of reports that over 2 million British kids are now obese and Britain is the 'fat capital' of Europe, according to researchers from the University of Madrid's School of Medicine whose study is published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 31st May 2009, claiming half the British nation to be overweight and that one in eleven deaths are now linked to carrying excess fat.

Esprit’s MD Andy Perrin said “With a shifting change in attitudes towards health and family life in the UK, we’ve seen a real move towards active and healthy holidays in 2009, more than at any other time. This has been catalysed by the difficult economic times. It seems that families are re-assessing their values and looking for holidays where they can spend more time together, play together and enjoy quality time together as a family”.

Swapping sun-beds for mountain bikes, couch-potato lifestyles for fresh mountain air and fat-laden fast food for healthier local produce is a trend that the company hopes will continue.

Esprit Holidays offer summer holidays to Alpine settings in France, Switzerland and Austria with optional rafting, cycling, quad biking, climbing, hiking, swimming, ice-skating and pony trekking. A week’s stay at chalets and chalet hotels costs from as little as £150 per person per week this summer, ie. £599 for a family of four, arriving on 4th July (11th July £779, 18th July £899). Prices include breakfast, packed lunch (5 days) and 3 course evening meals with wine and soft drinks (6 nights) but exclude travel.

Andy Perrin added “Even in the euro-zone mountain holidays are proving good value this summer, but rather more importantly for a nation that now has the dubious title of the `fat capital’ of Europe, it seems it’s the pounds we should be worrying about after all”.
