By: High Tech Tech High San Marcos, California - June 9, 2009 - Social networking technologies such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter lead charter school organization to launch first "hybrid" school. High Tech High is now offering an independent learning program that blends home-based independent study, online learning, and face-to-face experiences called High Tech High Flex. This new public charter program will be launching in the fall with an inaugural class of 100 9th grade students in North County San Diego. Though spaces are filling up, there is still time to apply for participation. High Tech High Flex is the first high school in San Diego county to offer online learning in a project based, collaborative environment. "Students at High Tech High create authentic, personalized projects in collaborative teams," explains Dr. Brian Dixon, director of High Tech High Flex. "Working in these teams prepares students for success in college and ultimately the workforce. Flex is a unique opportunity to use current technology, similar to Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, to participate in an engaging online learning community." And although Flex is not the first online high school in San Diego county, it is the first to be founded on High Tech High's principles of personalization, real-world connection, and common intellectual mission. "Many of the online high schools are built on an outdated, teacher-centered model," explains Dixon. "Students read the screen and take a quiz. There is no personalization, no interaction, no collaboration." "What I love about Flex," remarks Donel Lopez, a current 10th grade student at High Tech High North County, "is the fact that it is so flexible. You can work on projects whenever you want. You can sleep in, work late at night. You're not stuck in the same schedule every day. It's pretty cool." Although information on Flex is available on their website, hightechhigh.org/ Thursday, June 11th from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at High Tech High North County (1420 West San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos CA 92078 phone: 760.759.2700) Saturday, June 13th from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at High Tech High North County (1420 West San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos CA 92078 phone: 760.759.2700) Thursday, June 18th from 6:00 – 7:00 PM at High Tech High in Point Loma (2861 Womble Road, San Diego, CA 92106 phone: 619.243.5000) To apply for High Tech High Flex, families must complete the online application form (located at www.hightechhigh.org/ Contact: Dr. Brian J.
