June 3, 2009 - PRLog -- Open source innovator and Snort® creator, Sourcefire, Inc.  , a leader in Cyber  Security, today announced that Telekom Slovenije Group, a leading European information and communication service provider, has chosen the market leading Sourcefire 3D® System, with Sourcefire RNA®  (Real-time Network Awareness), to secure its business critical data, improve business continuity and maximise on the efficiency of its IT team.

Dragoslav Radin, Head of IT System Support for Telekom Slovenije comments:

“The telecommunications industry in Slovenia is highly competitive. We have to be extremely vigilant to make sure our data is not exposed because it could dramatically compromise our business. After suffering a series of incidents, resulting in service disruption and downtime, we knew we needed a more effective security system and started to look for an Intrusion Prevention System. Sourcefire came highly recommended and so we trialed the Sourcefire 3D System for 3 months. We haven’t looked back since.”

Following a successful pilot, Telekom Slovenije installed the Sourcefire 3D System. The company installed two sensors, one between the core and client network, the second to monitor the server to the core network. Automation of this previously time consuming manual task was the key objective and the system proved to be highly customisable and easy to manage. The 3D System combines a number of security technologies such as Intrusion Prevention System (http://www.sourcefire.com/solutions/etm/ips), Network Behavioural Analysis (NBA) and Vulnerability Management and feeds all this information into one central management console, the Sourcefire Defense Center®.

Radin continues:

“With the Sourcefire 3D System, we now have complete visibility of all network traffic whereas previously we had none, allowing us to prevent and protect against threats before, during and after a security incident. The system is customisable and easy to manage and the rules are always up-to-date. Additionally, it has allowed us to cost effectively optimise our IT operations and enhance productivity of IT resources because previously this was a manual task.”

The Sourcefire 3D System is unique as it collects all network data in the Sourcefire Defense Center, so that when an intrusion or other incidents are identified, the 3D System uses the threat data and network intelligence gathered by RNA to determine if the threat is real and if so, sends an instantaneous email alert to the security team.

Radin continues:

“It seems like we have more security incidents, but this is just because we are aware of them now and we have visibility of what is happening. The VRT rule set is so robust that we now see all of the security incidents on our network, and then RNA enables us to shrink this to an actionable list of true alerts we need to address. Before we were acting in a totally reactive way and only dealing with threats once they had become a problem. Now we are able to proactively deal with threats before they get to a stage where they impact the business.”

Now that the 3D System is up and running, Telekom Slovenije is looking to the next stage of its security plan and reviewing a possible implementation of Sourcefire RUA™ (Real-time User Awareness). RUA enables the Defense Centre to correlate threat, endpoint and network intelligence with user identity information, directly correlating individual user IDs with specific IP addresses, traffic and events.

Radin concludes:

“We have been extremely happy with the service and performance from the Sourcefire system and would happily recommend it. It has enabled us to optimise our IT operations and significantly improve security.”
