May 22, 2009 - PRLog -- The art of precious metal fire assaying is a mystery to most people and yet it’s an amazingly exact process that dates back to thousands of years. For Ross Metals, this mysterious art is a daily phenomenon that occurs within the walls of the company insuring its customers with the most quantitative and qualitative accuracy. In fact, Ross Metals pride themselves for their environmentally safe, clean and complete laboratory facility for the assaying of gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

Ross Metals uses assaying as a way to determine what is present in whatever sampling is being worked on such as scrap gold, scrap silver, scrap platinum, gold and platinum bench sweeps, gold and platinum filings and polishing sweeps. These metals become subjected to chemical analysis, which is the best way to measure the content of the aforementioned sampling.

In a fire assay, sampling preparation occurs through the spitting, crushing and pulverizing of the ore, which then is weighed and mixed with an assay flux. The assay flux is what makes the fire assay work in that it is imperative to provide the perfect environment for the precious metals to be recovered for its purpose of eventual pure customer satisfaction. The flux keeps the ph on the alkaline side so that the precious metal won’t turn into a vapor.

Ore and flux is heated in a clay pot or one of Ross Metals’ state of the art assaying furnaces. This process goes up to an approximate heat of 1100 c. or 1850 f. and happens for about an hour before the substance becomes a thick homogenous liquid which is then poured into a cone shaped mold that’s bottom is made of lead with all values dissolved as an amalgam. The wide end of the cone or “prill” is made up of glass that holds all the impurities.

Now the lead is separated from the glass by being smashed with a hammer or mallet and then the lead is pounded into a cube, which is weighed and placed in a container with a very thick bottom made from bone, ash or cement called a cupel.
Cupellation now begins when the sampling is placed back into the furnace at approximately 1,000 degrees.

The furnace is left slightly ajar so that oxygen can get in to combine with the lead so it can convert back to lead oxide, which now soaks in the cupel and absorbs a good amount of lead oxide. Once the lead oxide is all soaked in, it will leave a sphere of precious metal.

The precious metal is then flattened with a hammer or mallet and placed in a porcelain dish so it can be treated with 50% nitric acid until there is no more reaction.

This is quite the process, which requires that our technician practice the best of patience. Chemistry and art combined into one! Ross Metals takes it even further by repeating the whole thing three times in order to assure 100% accuracy! This is the kind of system that makes Ross Metals a maverick in a craft that has been around for three millenniums! This is only one of many reasons why Ross Metals is a leader in our jewelry and precious metal industry!
