May 2009 is National Water Safety MonthAmerican Leak Detection in Dallas/Fort Worth Is Reminding Customers To Put Safety First When It Comes To Engaging In Water Activities
By: Zunch “We believe firmly that education and awareness are the best safeguards against common swimming-pool related incidents,” said Will Knell, Director of Operations of the DFW area American Leak Detection. “We fully support the designation of National Water Safety Month and appreciate the awareness on the part of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals and their partner organizations, The World Waterpark Association and the National Recreation and Park Association for their efforts to increase water safety.” The three trade organizations are joining forces to remind swimming pool owners, parents and children to consider a few simple practices when it comes to water recreation of any kind. These guidelines lessen the chances of water-related accidents and include: • At all times, use the buddy system to watch out one another while in the water. Pair up with someone else and make it your business to keep any eye on that person while you are having fun. • Parental supervision is key. Parents should never leave their children unattended in a swimming pool, not even for a minute or two. It doesn’t take that long for a child to drown, so be sure there is parental supervision at all times. • If there are rules posted in the swimming pool area, be sure that everyone in and around the swimming pool is adhering to the posted rules. • If you’re child or loved one cannot swim, invest in swimming lessons. The lessons aren’t meant to help one become an Olympic swimmer, but rather to ensure they know how to swim well enough to function safely in the water. There will be a host of public service information dispensed about water safety throughout the month as well as education programs, corporate promotions and more, all geared towards increasing public awareness that will help in lessening the number of water-related injuries. “We just want to do our part to spread awareness of water safety,” said Knell. “Our customers are like family to us, so it’s important to us that they remain healthy and happy throughout the summer and practice safety first in the water.” For more information on National Water Safety Month, visit www.apsp.org, www.nrpa.org or www.waterparks.org.
